Galileo issue in Journal of Advances in Space Research

Scientific applications of Galileo Navigation Satellite System

Papers are invited for a special issue in Journal of Advances in Space Research entitled "Scientific applications of Galileo and future Global Navigation Satellite Systems". Articles derived from presentations (oral or posters) at the 2nd International Colloquium on Scientific and Fundamental Aspects of the Galileo Programme, co-sponsored by COSPAR, are encouraged as well as any other original appropriate manuscripts. However, other any other original manuscripts will also be considered. Foreseen topics include: first results derived using GIOVE data, Galileo system development and technology (ground receiver and satellites), experiments related to fundamental physics, future use of current and future GNSS data for time and frequency transfer, relationship between internal GNSS times, atmospheric sciences (ionosphere, troposphere, climatology), geodetic and geophysical applications (terrestrial reference frame, plate tectonics, high-rate GPS positioning), combined use of multi GNSS data, Satellite Laser Ranging tracking, interoperability of various GNSS, precise orbit determination for GNSS and for LEO satellites, mathematical and theoretical challenges related to the availability of future GNSS data, algorithms and models, constellation maintenance and space debris.

Papers must be submitted electronically through the EES Web site (http://ees.elsevier.com/asr) under the category "S.I. Galileo". All manuscripts will be submitted to a standard peer-reviewed process. Accepted manuscripts will be published in a Special Issue of Journal of Advances in Space Research (Elsevier, ISI Web of Science). Deadline for submission is March 1, 2010. Authors are encouraged to contact the Guest Editor (Pascal Willis, willis@ipgp.jussieu.fr) for any additional information. They will be kept regularly informed on the progress of the Special Issue until its expected publication in late 2010. Workshop on Monitoring North American Geoid Change

Boulder, Colorado, USA, October 21-23, 2009

URL: http://www.ngs.noaa.gov/GRAV-D/2009Workshop/

Dear Colleagues,

We are pleased to announce that a Workshop on Monitoring North American Geoid Change is going to be held in Boulder, Colorado, USA from October 21 through 23, 2009.

The goal of this workshop is to develop a collaborative plan to use common standards to monitor the geoid model over North America, through a combination of dedicated absolute gravity campaigns and reliance on continued satellite gravity missions. This monitoring is critical to various governments in North America that have begun moving toward a geoid-based determination of their vertical datum.

Experts in absolute and satellite gravity and geoid determination are asked to attend. The few oral presentations will be limited to invited speakers, but an open poster session will be held. A tour of the Micro‑G/LaCoste facilities and a tour of the Table Mountain Geophysical Observatory (TMGO) will be included.

  • Registration for the workshop is free.
  • Hotel and registration information are provided at the URL above.

We look forward to seeing you in Boulder!

2009 ILRS Technical Workshop on SLR Tracking of GNSS Constellations

Metsovo, Greece, Sept. 14-19, 2009

Dear Colleagues,

We have the pleasure to announce that the International Laser Ranging Service (ILRS) in collaboration with the National Technical University of Athens, Greece (NTUA) is organizing an ILRS Technical Workshop entitled:

SLR Tracking of GNSS Constellations

50 Years of Satellite Geodesy and Geodynamics

in Metsovo, Greece, from September 14 to 19, 2009, on the occasion of Prof George Veis 80th birthday and the 50th anniversary of his doctoral thesis, a document that laid the foundations of satellite geodesy. Details and the Second Circular are available from the workshop web page http://www.ntua.gr/MIRC/ILRS_W2009.

Objectives

  • Overview of the two techniques with emphasis on their synergism
  • Review of GNSS and SLR constellations & networks and current stale of the art
  • Satellite geodesy applied in geodynamics, POD, positioning, gravity, etc.
  • Survey of the likely gains in science from SLR tracking ofGNSS constellations
  • Examine approaches to help accomplish the goals set by GGOS, investigating options  such as:

·         higher repetition rates,

·         optimal normal point formulation,

·         interleaving tracking of targets, better sampling of orbits,

·         allocating targets to sub-networks, etc.

  • Optimization of the network design and deployment of the appropriate space segment
  • Discussion of the fundamental differences, geometric and dynamic, between geodetic cannonball type targets (LAGEOS) and the complicated GNSS spacecraft
  • Discussion of applications specifically enabled through the synergism of the two techniques. e.g. the likely improvement of LEO POD with the improved GNSS orbital products and their impact on Earth Observation products relying on these orbits (radar and laser altimetry, geopotential missions, atmospheric lidar and sounding missions, topography missions, SAR and InSAR missions, etc.).

We would like to invite you to participate in the workshop and submit presentations to the sessions of your choice. Deadline for abstract submission and early registration is September 2, 2009 (changed).

We look forward to seeing you all in Metsovo!

Erricos C. Pavlis and Demitris Paradissis
