Im Memoriam

Muzafer Serbetci (1936-2005)

Muzaffer Serbetci, who died on February 21, 2005 at the age of 69, was the preeminent and one of the most influential scientists who has worked on the extension of geodesy in Turkey. He graduated from the State Academy for Engineers and Architects in Istanbul, currently Yildiz Technical University, in 1952. His geodetic career began by being assigned to attend University of Bonn where under the tutelage of Prof. Helmut Wolf (1910-1994), a most influential geodesist of Germany at that time and head of the newly formed Institute for Theoretical Geodesy, he obtained a Master's degree in 1963 and after his five years as an university assistant he earned a Doctorate of Engineer in 1968. In May 1968 he returned to Turkeyand worked as a teacher in the team of Prof. Erdogan Özbenli (1928-1985) in establishing of department geodesy at the Technical University of Black See in Trabzon, where he became Associate Professor in 1972 and Professor in 1978. From 1980 to 1988 he was, alternately, in the employ of vice-chancellor of the technical university, dean of the faculty for geosciences, and head of the department geodesy. In 1995 he went to the University of Kocaeli to take part in establishing the department geodesy in this university. In 1998 he came to the Yildiz Technical University, where he began his geodetic study, and worked there as professor for the applied geodesy and statistic up to his retirement in 2003.

Serbetci published three books to adjustment theory, geodetic determination, and formulas used in geodesy. Before leaving the university he became fascinated by the history of geodesy and mapping. He published two books, the first of which being the Bibliographies of Famous Geodesist in the World, the second being the History of Geodesy in Turkey. Without any recognizable warning Muzaffer Serbetci left us far too early. We shall miss him and we mourn with his wife Nuray and his sons Murat, Altan, and Cem. We will remember him as a manyfold person, a good friend, and a kind colleague.
