To all IAG officers

Dear Colleagues,

Two years ago, at its General Assembly in Japan, the IAG adopted and put into place new Statutes and By-laws which differed substantially from the old ones. In order to identify problems with this new administrative framework as soon as possible, the IAG Executive Committee decided to establish a Review Committee for the period between the General Assemblies in Japan and Italy. The Committee was charged with the task of detecting and fixing problems that have been encountered in working with the new Statutes and By-laws.

Since you are the ones who work most closely with the new Statutes and By-laws, we would like to address you first. If there is anything that needs to be improved, please let us know. Difficulties you may have encountered are:

§         Definitions or formulations in the new Statutes and By-laws that are ambiguous

§         Contradictions in the new Statutes and By-laws

§         Procedures that simply do not work

§         Procedures that introduce unnecessary bureaucracy

§         Anything that hinders creativity and flexibility

To improve the system, we need to know where it is creaky. Please drop us a note if you have come across something that could be done in a simpler or more efficient way. The members of the Committee and their e-mail addresses are given below. Send us an e-mail or talk to one of us at Cairns.

Kind regards,

Klaus-Peter Schwarz

(for the committee)

Expression of Interest: Special Issues of the Journal of Geodesy

Occasionally, the Journal of Geodesy includes special issues on relevant geodetic topics, such as the one on GLONASS guest-edited by Pascal Willis (volume 75, number 11).  Under the new Editorial Board, three new special issues are in preparation: one on "Satellite and Inverse Theory" guest-edited by Nico Sneuuw and Jurgen Kusche; another on “DORIS”, guest-edited by Pascal Willis; and the third on "Testing geoids using a synthetic gravity model", guest edited by Michael Kuhn and myself. Announcements have already been made regarding the first two, and the third will be announced shortly.

This message is to seek input from the wider geodetic community on potential topics and guest editors for future special issues of the Journal. Please direct these to me, the Editor in Chief, at W.Featherstone@curtin.edu

Struve Geodetic Arc added to the World Heritage List

At its session in Durban, South Africa, on July 15, 2005, the World Heritage Committee approved inclusion of the Struve Geodetic Arc in the World Heritage List. The Struve Geodetic Arc was measured from 1816 to 1855 under the direction of Friedrich George Wilhelm Struve. It follows longitude east 25° fairly close for over 2,820 kilometres, stretching from northern Norway to the Black Sea. The designated area of the Arc consists of 34 stations, spanning 10 countries.

For more information see http://www.worldheritagesite.org/sites/struvegeodeticarc.html and http://www.maanmittauslaitos.fi/default.asp?site=3&id=831&docid=3173.
