Summary of the GGOS Days 2022

GGOS organized the annual GGOS Days this year at November 14-15, 2022 in Munich (Germany) as a hybrid meeting at the Bavarian Academy of Science and Humanities (BAdW) in the Residenz. In total 111 interested people participated in this conference. 33 of them in-person and 78 virtually. The GGOS Days 2022 meeting was locally organized by the DGK (German Geodetic Commission), the BAdW (Bavarian Academy of Science and Humanities) and the TUM (Technical University of Munich).

The conference started with an Opening Session with presentations on DGK, IAG and GGOS. It was followed by the Keynote Speaker Session with presentations covering novel geodetic technologies and procedures as well as contributions of geodesy to climate change pdrocesses. In addition, all GGOS components reported on their recent activities and presented their plans for the coming year. It includes the two GGOS Bureaus, the three GGOS Focus Areas, the two GGOS Affiliates, the GGOS Science Panel, the GGOS Coordinating Office as well as the GGOS Committees and the GGOS Working Groups. The GGOS Days also provided space for fruitful discussions. All in all, this conference was very successful.

The participants and the topics to be addressed during the individual meetings are indicated in the agenda given below.

Directly after the GGOS Days 2022 the GGOS Strategic Plan Workshop was convened at the same venue. Key people within GGOS and IAG discussed together with invited IAG Service representatives the future direction and goals of GGOS. The discussion was based on the results of a community survey to develop a new strategy of GGOS.

The GGOS Days minutes, all presentations and the recorded conference are available at the GGOS Days website: https://ggos.org/event/ggos-days-2022/.

22nd International Workshop on Laser Ranging

Three years after its last meeting in person, the International Laser Ranging Service (ILRS) has celebrated the 22nd edition of its International Workshop in Guadalajara (Spain). The week of 7–11 November, over 170 delegates from 20 different countries participated in the conference, organised by the Observatory of Yebes, the National Geographic Institute of Spain (IGN/CNIG), and the ILRS.

The event, for the first time in a hybrid format with both in person and online participation, has been an excellent and much awaited opportunity for the experts in the various SLR-related fields to meet, discuss and exchange ideas and new developments.

The scientific and technical programme comprised 10 sessions, with topics touching upon geodetic science and analysis, data processing, satellite missions, the ground network, engineering and new applications, lunar laser ranging and deep space, and space debris. 77 oral talks and 32 posters were presented, including four invited talks given by Nicholas Brown (Geosciences Australia), Pablo de Vicente (Observatory of Yebes), Rüdiger Haas (Onsala Space Observatory), and Tim Flohrer (ESA).

Among many other notable points, the conference heard about the contribution of SLR to the latest realisations of the terrestrial reference frame, state of the art analysis strategies for POD and parameter estimation from SLR and LLR observations, the challenges and path towards processing refinements, ground network expansion, and engineering innovations that push the boundaries of precision, accuracy, stability and productivity of the technique.

As in previous occasions, the ILRS handed in the SLR Innovation Awards in recognition to colleagues with especially remarkable contributions to the development of the technique. This year the awards were given to Ron Noomen (TU Delft), Jean-Marie Torre (Observatoire de la Côte d'Azur), and Graham Appleby (NERC Space Geodesy Facility). The various ILRS Standing Committees met in person as well for the first time in three years, including its Governing Board, which elected Stephen Merkowitz (NASA/GSFC) as its Chair for the 2023–2024 term.

The presentation materials, posters, conference proceedings, and videos of the talks will be made available, with permission of the authors, on the ILRS website (CDDIS/NASA) in early 2023. The local organising committee and the international programme committee thank dearly the participation of all attendants and their contributions, the invited speakers, session chairs, sponsors and institutions that lent their support to make this event successful.

In 2023 the ILRS organises with the local hosts (UNSA) a Technical Workshop meeting in Arequipa (Perú), and the next International Workshop on Laser Ranging will hopefully take place in Kunming in 2024, after several postponements.
